Hello fellow WIPpeteers! As you can see, I’ve moved. I see that many of you use WordPress, and I did some investigating and found that I like the look of it better than BlogSpot. I was absent last week from WIPpet Wednesday because I was out of town, but this week I am back! Without further ado, here are 8 sentences from the 2nd chapter of Spellbound in the “How You Found Me” series, in celebration of the 8th month of August.
****
Terry stood still, silently appraising his karate pupil as the seven year old boy moved through the motions of a low block four times in succession, stopped and paused, then moved through the motions for a high block. The movements were slow and deliberate, the child’s eyes focused on a particular spot in the wall, concentration and desire to move through the exercise without a mistake clearly evident.
This was Greg’s second private karate lesson. Normally for someone his age, Terry was used to seeing a child half-heartedly stroll through the first few lessons with more excitement and thrills than any actual determination for immediate perfection and mastery. He had to remind himself, yet again, that Harper’s Grove wasn’t like Emery, his hometown. Here, children that enrolled at Artie’s Gym had too much of a personal reason to learn how to defend from an attack. Greg was not the first pupil to show such grim determination at so young an age for mastering everything Terry was teaching. No, he had a full day ahead with other pupils of varying ages with that same look in their own eyes.

Thanks! It has a cleaner, friendlier feel to it, don’t you think? More website-like and professional.

I was the same as you Sarah, I started off on Blogspot but I find WordPress a lot easier to use to interact with other writers. Great blog, lovely excerpt. I like the detail of Greg’s quiet determination to learn karate.

I agree, I already like this place better than BlogSpot. Thank you!

Cool! Now it will be easier to keep up with you. 🙂
I loooove that the kids behave differently in different towns. The history of a place definitely influences the way people, even children, behave.

No more missing posts that disappear into the great wide unknown! Now to figure out how to change the settings so I don’t have to approve every comment and let it just post automatically. . . any ideas?

From the dashboard, mouse over Settings in the left-hand menu. Click on Discussion (4th down). Under the Before Comment Appears heading, select Comment author must have a previously approved comment.
Each individual who comments will need to be approved once, but after that they’re good to go. 🙂

Yes!! That little box had a check mark, but I unclicked it. I don’t care about moderating the comments. 😛

I often have reply problems with BlogSpot. Usually no problems with WordPress and I like the looks it offers. I love your header photo. Very nice. 🙂
And very nice excerpt as well. It shows a lot about and sets a definite tone.

Yes! And BlogSpot’s ‘traffic’ tracker was really unreliable for accurate information, I hated it. Thank you, I quite like that photo as well. Though now my hair is chopped off and short, so it’s out-of-date now, lol. *shrugs*

Welcome too to the WordPress crew, Sarah! (from yet another former Blogger user who made the transition).
This was a wonderful scene, Sarah. The way that Terry notes the differences in his students from his older town to Harper’s Grove has, by far, given me the best sense of how strongly felt the attacks were. The determination, even in the youngest children, for “Never Again” comes through loud and clear. Great excerpt!

Thank you Eden! I love hearing thoughts from all of you. It gives me a great idea of what’s working and what isn’t 🙂

I’m debating about moving to wordpress as so many of my friends seem to be on it. However I’m really attached to my blog spot site and I just quite can’t give up on it yet.
It’s sad that the kids in the excerpt are all described as being so serious – however it’s understandable when you consider what the town has been through. As always I look forward to seeing more!

Christina, I have the advantage that I haven’t had my blog for very long, and I have not concentrated much on building a large audience, so I figured now was a very good time to move before all of that grew. Otherwise I would have had a harder time making the decision.
I was specific in the tone I wanted to set in illustrating the effects of what Harper’s Grove has been through. I want to show how devastating the beginning was, because so much is story set-up. I place the reader right in the middle, where the Defenders have an established presence in the town. I needed the beginning to have strong imagery to introduce these guys and carry the reader through the set-up. The Defenders don’t make an appearance for a while.

Yay, WordPress! Now I will know when you reply to my comments! 😀 I love your header image, too! My house also has pots of peacock feathers adorning it. 🙂
I love this excerpt. There’s a sense of melancholy in it as you imagine the life these kids could have had if not for the horrible things that have happened in their town.

This moment in your WIPpet speaks volumes of the town and its people in very just a moment.
Welcome to WordPress. I’ve been here for years and love it.
